SOS | Member-Led Meeting

 by Khushi Faldu

SOS meeting notes from 2/25/21.

With the pandemic infiltrating our lives, many people have wanted to help the community in a different shape or form. Two individuals began initiatives to help the elderly. Kaitlyn and Khushi have both adapted to the ways of being virtual with these projects.

Next Door Kitchen

Led by Kaitlyn, Next Door Kitchen is a service for others. Their mission is to provide homemade foods for residents at senior homes to create a closer-knit community with residents at senior homes and youth. Since October, they have provided over 1000 servings. You, too, can learn and have fun baking while helping the community. On top of that, you can earn service hours if you sign up at the Sunrise of Marlboro’s website.

Virtual Meetings with the Elderly

About one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, which is associated with a 50% increased risk of dementia, heart disease, stroke, and premature mortality. Loneliness is also associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide. During this pandemic, the numbers are rising every day. Khushi will hopefully have virtual meetings with the elderly from the Township of Marlboro. This meeting will be similar to sitting with your friends in a group circle. During the meeting, you can do origami, yoga, write stories, or complete trivia. Their future plans include helping seniors with getting vaccine appointments.
